Are You, Your Brother’s (Sister’s) Keeper?
We often hear the expression ‘my brother’s keeper’ used in various instances. Several articles, poems, books, movies, and websites have been created in effort to explain the meaning of the saying.
Its origin is from the biblical story of Cain and Abel in Genesis 4:2-10. Cain murdered his brother, because the Lord favored Abel’s sacrifice over his own. When God questioned Cain about his brother, he replied, “I know not: Am I my brother’s keeper?”
While researching the topic, I came across the powerful poem below entitled ‘My Brother’s Keeper’, that caused me to stop and pause.
How many of us share the writer’s view, and more importantly how do we measure up to the love shown in this piece?
My Brother’s Keeper
Am I my brother’s keeper?
Yes I am
I am his voice when he can not speak
I am his strength when he is weak
Am I my brother’s keeper?
Yes I am
I am his provider when he is in need
I am his arms when he can not reach
Am I my brother’s keeper?
Yes I am
I am his justice when he is wronged
I am his friend when he is alone
Am I my brother’s keeper?
Yes I am
I am his courage when he is afraid
I am his comforter when he is dismayed
Am I my brother’s keeper?
Yes I am
I am his hope when he does not believe
I am his truth when he is deceived
Am I my brother’s keeper
Yes I am
I am his guide when he has gone astray
I am his aide if he needs help along the way
Am I my brother’s keeper
The answer is yes
I am him, I am her
I am my brother’s keeper.

Amen! I truly agree with the word. And I love that piece that was shared above. A lot of times we are so consumed with our own issues and we don’t realize that our bro/sis may really need our help.
